How the two agents work differently

ChatGPT agent, per OpenAI's launch, combines the older Operator browser agent with deep research. When you start a task it gets a virtual computer with a visual browser, a text browser, a terminal and your connected apps. It pauses and hands you the browser for logins (OpenAI calls this takeover mode), asks before consequential actions like purchases, and requires you to supervise some sites.

Muse is closer to a standing employee. Meta's launch post says it "keeps working after people close the app, and comes back when something changes or when it needs approval." It keeps a workspace, memory files and goals in a persistent Linux VM. Users poking around that VM found soul.md, identity.md and memory files in the agent's home directory, and one Reddit user mapped nightly jobs and per-goal crons.

That persistence shows up in how people use it. David Singleton has Muse generate a new AI-news podcast every day on a schedule. Another user tracks a water-filter schedule and Fandango prices. Those are standing jobs, not one-off tasks.

Where Muse is stronger

Money and errands in the US. The catalog's biggest cluster is savings: an AT&T bill cut to $40 a month, a $250 delay credit in five minutes, $1,200 a year in forgotten subscriptions. Muse can also place phone calls; Matt Schlicht's agent called five Tesla stores at once.

Price of entry. Muse has a usage-limited free tier. The Batch reports it at up to 100M tokens a week. ChatGPT agent launched on paid plans, with Pro getting 400 agent messages a month and Plus and Team getting 40 at launch, according to TechCrunch's 2025 coverage. Where ChatGPT agent is stronger

Availability. Muse is US-only and 18+ at launch, and Meta's help page says Muse and its subscriptions are in "limited testing." If you're outside the US, this comparison is settled.

Maturity. ChatGPT agent has been public since mid-2025. Muse is weeks old, and it shows: Amazon blocked Muse purchases from September 20, a researcher found a Mac zero-day, and an accessibility review found VoiceOver gaps.

General assistant work. If most of your day is writing, analysis and research with occasional agentic tasks, ChatGPT puts the agent next to everything else you use. Muse is built around doing tasks rather than chatting.

Trust. Some people won't hand Meta their inbox and card, and TechCrunch raised that question on launch day. Meta says Muse data is kept out of its ad systems and training is opt-out.

Safety and approvals compared

Both ask before consequential actions. The architectures differ.

Muse separates the agent from the thing that grants permission. A process called Sentinel is, in Meta's security write-up, "the sole permission authority" for connector actions and all network egress. TechCrunch reported that in the first 12 days of each launch, Muse had about 1.8M iOS downloads in the US and Canada versus 1.3M for ChatGPT's app. That compares app launches, not the agent features, and it says nothing about retention. CNBC put Muse above 2.5M downloads by September 21.
