Muse for ecommerce: agentic checkout, partners and the Amazon block
What Meta's Muse means for online stores: Stripe Link, Shop Pay and PayPal checkout, retail connectors, Amazon's block, and how merchants are getting listed.
Muse is a shopping agent: it browses, compares and checks out on a user's behalf, and Meta plans to earn "a small fee from transactions." For merchants, the practical routes in are Stripe Link (1M+ merchants already covered), announced Shop Pay and PayPal checkout, a directory connector, or a custom connector users add themselves. Amazon has chosen the opposite route and blocked Muse from buying on its store.
How does Muse pay for things?
Through Stripe Link at launch. Per Stripe, at the 1M+ businesses that accept Link, Muse checks out with the user's saved payment method. Everywhere else, Link issues a single-use virtual card scoped to that purchase. The catalog entry is Stripe Link wallet for Muse.
Around September 21–22, more checkout partners were announced:
- Shop Pay from Shopify (PYMNTS)
- PayPal global checkout (PYMNTS)
- Instacart, drawing on about 100,000 stores (Instacart)
Shopify Catalog was also a launch connector (PostFast list). On the Mac, Muse asks before making purchases (Meta).
Which retailers work with Muse?
At Connect 2026 Meta announced connectors from Walmart, Best Buy, American Eagle, DICK'S, Fanatics, Gap, Michael Kors, Sephora, Ulta and Wayfair, plus Expedia and Instacart (Meta). "Announced" is the key word; check each one's status before you plan around it.
Ticket and experience sellers were earlier: Ticketmaster recommends events with purchases on its own marketplace, and Fever handles concerts, museums and theater.
Why did Amazon block Muse?
Amazon blocked Muse purchases effective September 20. GeekWire reports Amazon's reasons: the agent accessed its store without permission, did not identify itself and appeared to store credentials (GeekWire).
The lesson for merchants is that agent access is a business decision. You can welcome agents through a partner checkout, or refuse them. One user built an Amazon cart API that Muse reaches over SSH to add items to their own carts after the block, which shows how motivated some shoppers are and why a clear policy beats an accidental one.
What are shoppers actually buying with Muse?
Catalog entries, as reported by their authors:
- Dinner tickets via Link: Alex Volkov gave Muse and a rival agent the same task; Muse booked through Link while the other was still searching.
- Flight booking via Duffel: search, book and manage trips across 500+ airlines.
- Instacart grocery shopping.
- Wardrobe and stylist connector: indexes a user's wardrobe and recommends outfits, a natural lead-in to purchases.
And on the seller side, individuals are using Muse to list goods: books priced from photos and listed on eBay, and Meta's demo of a Facebook Marketplace listing built from a phone video.
How can a small store get into Muse?
Three routes, from least to most effort:
- Accept Stripe Link. Muse can already check out with it.
- Publish a clean API. Users can add any API as a custom connector, and Muse writes the integration. AdaptlyPost's guide shows the pattern: OpenAPI spec, docs, bearer token.
- Apply for the directory at muse.ai/platform. Review covers function, security and legal, and Stripe Link handles payments. Meta got 1,500+ applications in under a week (TechCrunch). No developer terms or fee schedule had been published as of September 18 (CellCog).
A good template for service businesses is the HVAC and plumbing connector: quote a visit, hold a slot, book, send a deposit link, check status. Swap the nouns and it fits salons, repair shops or tutors.
What does agentic checkout change for a store's funnel?
Most of a store's funnel assumes a person: product photos, urgency banners, upsell modals, cart recovery email. An agent skips all of that. It reads the listing, compares it against the user's stated preferences and budget, and either buys or moves on. A few practical implications follow from how Muse is built, not from any published conversion data (there is none yet):
- Structured product data matters more. Shopify Catalog is a launch connector, which suggests Muse works from catalog data where it can. Accurate titles, variants, sizes and stock levels are what an agent sees.
- Checkout friction is a hard stop. Forced account creation, email verification codes and CAPTCHAs are exactly the steps that stall agents in the catalog reports. Wallet checkout through Link, Shop Pay or PayPal avoids them.
- Stock accuracy is a support issue. Rich Rose's salon back-office test included cross-checking out-of-stock items. If your storefront shows items you cannot ship, an agent will happily buy them.
- Price watching is automatic. One user already has Muse tracking Fandango prices. Expect agents to wait for your sale and buy the minute it starts.
Should I block AI shopping agents like Amazon did?
It depends on what you sell and who controls the customer relationship. Amazon runs its own assistant and ad business on its storefront, so an outside agent that skips both is a cost. A small brand that pays for every visit may see an agent-placed order as cheap acquisition. The middle path is to allow agents through a partner checkout you trust and block anonymous scraping, which is roughly what the Stripe Link and Shop Pay arrangements offer.
What should merchants watch out for?
- Agent identification. Amazon's complaint was partly that Muse did not identify itself. Decide how you want to detect and treat agent traffic.
- Returns and disputes. An agent-placed order that goes wrong is still your support ticket. See support triage with Muse.
- Fees. Meta says it will take a small transaction fee but has not published rates.
- Audience. US only and 18+ at launch, though Muse passed 2.5M downloads by September 21 (CNBC).
